Successful completion of this course will provide participants with the knowledge and skills to be able to develop an asthma management plan and provide asthma related first aid interventions in the workplace.

The course covers the correct use of reliever medication, recognition, risk management, prevention and risk minimisation strategies related to asthma.   

Individuals completing this course will be able to apply their skills and knowledge in either the workplace or in the community.

** There are specific industries that require this additional training such as Childcare workers; school teachers; Aged and community care workers; Sports; Tourism & Hospitality.

​

It is recommended this course be renewed every 3 years in line with industry standards.

​

Entry requirements          

Participants must have the physical fitness to be able to meet the demands of the practical demonstration such as assisting a casualty into the correct position and administering asthma medication.

Pre-course study: Students may be required to undertake online pre-course work prior to attending the face to face session depending on the course delivery mode.

Online study: Students must have access to a computer, smartphone, tablet or other electronic device with access to the internet to complete the online/ pre-course studies.

Assessment requirements

Individuals undertaking this course will be expected to complete both written and practical assessment tasks.

  Blended delivery: 

  Online pre-course work (min.1hr)    

  and face to face training & assessment -  2 hours

 

OR

  Full face to face: 3 hours

   Up to 5 students - 20 minutes

   Over 5 students - 40 minutes

Foundation skills required

​

Foundation skills are the underpinning communication skills required for participation in the workplace, the community and in adult education and training.

​

  • Learning – to learn to provide first aid response in an emergency.

​​

  • Reading – to administer medication for anaphylaxis or asthma.​

 

  • Writing – to complete documentation such as reports/risk assessments.

​​

  • Oral communication – to call the ambulance and provide a handover.​

 

  • Numeracy – to count the number of compressions and breaths.
